I can credit starting my 20+ successful years as a B2B direct marketing freelance copywriter to the GEICO gecko – sort of.
I was working in real estate, after ending eight years in direct sales, when my name was given to the marketing folks at GEFCO. That was the Government Employees Financial Corporation – the precursor to today’s GEICO. They were looking for a freelance copywriter, and an associate of mine made the referral. He knew I had a B.S.B.A. in marketing and had begun my career as a copywriter.
Well, they hired me, and four months later I quit my job to become a freelance copywriter full time. Every day doing this work is wonderful.
Why? Because I get the opportunity to make a difference for the businesses I serve. What I do counts. What I add to marketing programs shows up on the bottom line. There’s no greater reward than that as a freelance copywriter.
